Rattling Trunk Lid

When riding on a rough road (there are many here in Rhode Island) without my better half on back, the trunk lid rattles loudly, to the point of banging. The trunk is securely attached to the rack, there is no apparent free play between the lid and trunk base, yet it bangs. I have tried insulation strips between the lid and base, and bungee cords holding the lid to the base with limited success. The strips eventually compress, the bungees stretch, and the noise returns. The only times the banging is non-existent is when the wife is on board, leaning against the backrest, or when the trunk is full, with the inner contents pushing upwards.

There is a rubber seal in the lid of the box, also for the side trunks. Also try to adjust the 2 screws on the upper latches, you may have to cut a notch to move them. But if you are missing the rubber seal, try some of the stuff that screens are held in with. Available at any hardware store. I looked at mine again and if its tight when pulled as you say, check you hinge pins and the mounting points for the hinges themselves. You may have to replace some hardware. Check your lower box real close because they are prone to crack and breaks. also watch for hairline cracks at the hinges. Stop drill with very small bit, fill with superglue. Hope this helps.
