Driving Lights
I would like to add driving lights and am interested in a pair that are rated at 55W-65W halogen. The question was raised whether the stator would handle the load. If not, is there a way around this? Answer - Dave LeontyAs long as you don't have an excess of electrical use (ie) light bars etc. ,you should have no problem at all. I run a pair of 60W D/Ls, lighted rotor covers and a 15 lamp lightbar (sorry I am not sure of the wattages, I could check if you need that info) with no problem at all. If I haul my trailer I leave the light bar off. When hooking up your lights there are ONLY TWO WAYS TO DO IT. 1/ Direct from your battery or acc. terminal with a fuse and switch. 2/ Using a relay connected to the High Beam circuit of your head light to control thr relay. The relay is then connected to the Acc terminay for power ant the output goes to your lamps. I added a switch as well, as I drive with my highbeam on in the daytime for added visibility. ** DO NOT connect the driving lamps directly to the head lamp circuit or you will damage or destroy the circuitry in the computer monitor** If I can be of any further help please let Bob or myself know. Dave Leonty XVZ12 Royale Alternative Driving Light LocationOn my '86 (don't know if pre-86 is the same), there is an air inlet/scoop directly under the headlight. The cover is held in place by two fairing bolts. Once removed you can see the actual scoop and the two imbedded nuts that held the original bolts. Those nuts make a great place to mount a pair of driving lights. The area is nice and flat and you can run the wires right up the fairing to the fuse box. The original bolts worked just fine with the brackets for my lights. I chose to leave the cover off after the mount, but a person could simply buy longer bolts and leave the cover on, mounting the lights through it. The extra wattage WILL damage your computer monitor. Make sure the shop uses a relay for the lights. Connect the power to your Acc. circuit or main terminal in the fuse block(using the proper fuse) and splice the control circuit to the high beam circuit in your headlight. This will spare you the expense of having to replace your monitor in the future. - Dave Leonty
