Hardwire Fan Motor

this year, my 85 royale coolant temperature (as displayed on the gauge) kept getting progressively hotter and hotter before the fan would kick on. a couple of days ago while setting in traffic the bike boiled over--that's right, the fan never kicked on and i wasn't paying attention as i should have been. shame on me. anyway i never checked the price of a replacement thermostatic switch but went to wal-mart and got a toggle switch for about a couple of bucks. the switch mounts nicely in the right side of the fairing above the class switches. since my bike has no cb this was no problem. basically the wiring scheme is to disconnect the wire from the thermoswitch. make an extension and hook this to one terminal of the toggle switch. the other terminal goes to any GROUND point one may wish to use. basically i now just turn the fan on as long as i'm town or any slow moving traffic. when i get out on the road-turn off the fan. my general rule is to turn on the fan when it reached 2/3 full scale deflection. it's still in the green at that point. so far this setup has worked fine for me. also---to test the fan, disconnect the wire from the thermoswitch and touch it to a ground point. turn on the ignition and the fan will run if everything else is in order. if the relay is bad of course the fan will not run and that's another problem. hope this helps someone.

(Additional Thoughts) One may mount the switch wherever it is convenient to do so. i mounted mine in the right hand area of the fairing above the CLASS controller. be careful where you drill and don't go into anything delicate. look and check before you drill. also a big CAVEAT----be sure to observe the temp gauge and don't forget to TURN ON THE FAN before things get TOO HOT!! i use as a rule of thumb, to turn on the fan when 2/3 full scale deflection is reached. things are still in the green at 2/3 defelection. be observant.
