83-85 Shop Manual Misprint - P/U Coil Test |

83-85 Shop Manual Misprint - P/U Coil TestBob, this is Jeff Foster. I found a mistake in the 83-85 repair manual, I thought I should identify. While testing my p/u coils, according to the manual, I had bad coils. I asked a friend about it. He said he had already replaced his coils, as his were also bad. But he thought the instructions were wrong. The manual says to probe the orange wire as common, and test resistance to each of the other four pins. When I did that, I had one coil good, and three with double resistance. So did my friend. So he took his old coils apart. He discovered the black wire to be common. So he tested his old coils with the black as common, and probe the other four, and his old coils tested good. I have tried this on all three of my Ventures. The 83, 84, and the 88. All with the same results. Orange as common, one good coil, three bad coils. Then with black as common, all coils, good. That makes five sets of coils, bad one way, and good the other. All of our bike are running good. So, I have to believe the manual to be incorrect. I have also asked Frank Denk, to test his bike. I haven't heard back yet. But I will let you know when he writes me. You could try it yourself. The plug to check, is behind the left side cover, just below the seat. It will be a square plastic plug, with five wires in it. Try to probe the orange as common. Then the black as common. See if you get the same results. Thanks,
