Air Box Holes & MPG |

Air Box Holes & MPGNote: I drilled six holes about 1/2 in to 5/8 in my air box top.
All the gas burned was 87 Octane only. The MPG was Fantastic but note below. Analysis, the holes have helped the MPG, but, I do not have good low RPM power, thus, it appears that I am running too lean. When I got home I put Duck Tape over two of the front holes. I have ridden the bike last night and it seems the power is up. I will run with four holes and do another test and analysis and possibly go down to two holes. ---------------------------------------------------- Ever since 1984 the local hot shot wrench at our local Yamaha dealer has been adding 4 inch diameter vents to the air filters on all of the Ventures in California Chapter #3. Over the years, this amounts to at least 30 Ventures. Specifically what he does (without knowledge or approval of Yamaha) is drill 2 1 inch holes in the front next to the battery and 2 on the opposite side near the gas filler and place round mesh plugs available from any dirt bike shop. They have foam rubber inserts which are washable and eliminate the additional "roar" from the incoming air. You effectively nearly double the intake capacity. All 6 of my Ventures had this done. I have always gotten 40 to 44 mpg when not pulling my 400 lb. trailer. With it and wife I average 35 mpg. It is inexpensive and helps top end performance and fuel economy. Hope this helps.
