How many accessories can I run?

I'm impressed with the knowledge you guys have so I thought I'd ask this: I have heated grips, heated vest, driving lights, tach, as well as a set of 55 watt spot lights mounted on my lower forks. How many items can our altenators handle?? When is it too much. I checked some of your profiles and noticed that either you guys upgraded altenators or use long extension cords. Great site, great bunch of Venture guys and glad to be a member!!

Tim, there has been many threads on the exact number of amps/watts you can draw at one time. I can't recite the specs to you at this time.

I have a lot of lights and gadgets on my bike.

My best advise would be to install a quality voltmeter. I use this from Kuryakyn as do many other members:

When this thing isn't showing you green.... it's time to power down something. That is your best way to manage your accessories IMHO.

As for upgrading the alternator, there has been a lot of talk of this, but to my knowledge, no-one has come out with a suitable solution. It looks like we are stuck with what we have.

With the voltmeter, I can see if I have too much going and power down as necessary.

I went with 37.5 watt H7616 halogen passing lamps and many of my lights are LED making them low draw yet bright. I can run most all my lights under normal circumstances with no problem. If I fire up the CD changer and GPS, sometimes I may have to shut down a light or two, but not usually. Mainly if I am running low RPM for a while.

Hope this helps.

Gary offers good advice. The voltmeter will keep ya aware of whether or not you're over taxin the system.I can tell ya that if ya run everythin that ya have added at the same time, you are just askin for trouble. If ya add em all up,you'll find that your total almost doubles the stators maximum output. The Venture only makes 360 watts or 30 amps,TOTAL.That's it.And that's at 5000 rpm.So do the math and yourself a favor.Use those accessaries conservatively and add a voltmeter. Gary, that volt meter looks really slick! Got any pics of where you installed it?

Sure, here are two pictures of where I installed mine. One shows it off, and one shows it on. I wired mine inside the fairing and tied the wiring into my fairing AUX power wiring. This way it is on when I have the ignition switch set to Accessory as well. As a bonus, the lights serve as a reminder that I did not turn the key all the way to the Off position.  When I don't see at least one green light, I know it is time to manage my accessories and power something down. Usually when riding I see two green lights. Gary

I Installed a Datel voltmeter last night. It looks something like this when on.

It is made to be flush mounted but there isn't dash area to really do that with so my next plan was to put it in a small black plastic kit box from Radio Shack and mount that somewhere. Again I couldn't find anything I was happy with. I ended up just using some good two sided tape and mounting it under the fairing. This is probably better as it will make it easier to read as it is usually somewhat shaded. Here is another shot with it off.

It has a red face to it so I'm not sure what it would look like against another colored fairing but it looks ok I think.  Peter Behm - Venturer #67

I used one from http://www.electricalconnection.com/meters_indicators/bm.htm

I got the 'universal' model.  It could easily have fit it in the dash, but I didn't want to drill a hole in there until I was sure it was going to be visible enough. I may move it to the dash eventually.  I tapped into a wire that is hot with the key in the accessory or 'run' position.  Makes a good reminder when accidentally leaving the key in the accessory position. Here is where I mounted mine. Dave Miller
