Deer Whistles - Do they work?

First, most deer whistles work SOME of the time. None work well all of the time, for the following reasons: They almost always come in pairs and have to be mounted a minimum distance apart to create he necessary harmonic effect. This distance (which varies by model) is often not achievable on anything but the very largest touring bikes. The whistles also require a minimum airflow to operate, usually around 50 Kph. If you are traveling at 65 Kph and catch a 25 Kph tailwind, your deer whistles will not operate. They can also be rendered ineffective by rain, or by ingesting a bug or any small particle of dirt or road debris.

But let's just say for the sake of argument that you've got them mounted the right distance apart, you are traveling fast enough, there is no tailwind, it's not raining and you just cleaned them out a few minutes ago. Your deer whistles are working as advertised.

Animal behavior experts tell us that deer, when startled (which is what the whistles are meant to do), tend to leap straight forward - in whatever direction they happen to be facing at the time. They don't check to see where the noise came from - they just jump.

That's great if the deer you just startled is facing away from the road. That's very bad if he happens to be facing toward the road, and your line of travel. He will jump straight into or in front of your motorcycle.

It's kind of like a game of Russian Roulette. You just have to decide if you want to play or not.
